The Friendly Shop
The Friendly Shop is a place where service users and staff can make purchases for a minimal cost in a therapeutic and safe environment. It plays an important role in the morale of service users, allowing them to socialise and get out of the ward. It affords a shopping experience that they otherwise would not have while receiving treatment. Service users are able to learn about managing money and budgeting.
This project has been extended to include a skills development component to it. Service users are offered the opportunity to learn retail skills like customer service, food preparation, use of a till, and stock control which will equip them for employment opportunities after discharge.
Other service users volunteer in the Friendly Shop as a way to give back to their community. Service users find great support and encouragement here, growing in self-esteem and confidence.
