Raising Awareness

“The Friends of Valkenberg sees patients as people first. They are people who happen to have a mental illness.”

— The Friends of Valkenberg Trust, Volunteers

As much as progress has been made in understanding and treating mental illness; crippling stigma still affects those with mental health-related diagnoses or hospitalizations.

Through working with community groups to inform and educate, Friends arranges tours and talks, coordinates schools to do community service at the hospital, and works closely with local newspapers to increase public awareness. One of the best ways we can assist in patient recovery is to help the surrounding communities move toward a greater understanding of the truths of mental illness, and thus create a more receptive and supportive environment for patients.
